Situated at the mouth of the Ganges and is spread across areas of West Bengal.

Known for the Royal Bengal Tigerand numerous fauna including species of birds, spotted deer, crocodiles and snakes.

It is estimated that there are 500 Bengal tigers and about 30,000 spotted deer in the area.

Is the largest single block of tidal halophytic mangrove forest in the world.

The forest spreads over 10,000 sq.km of which about 6,000 are in Bangladesh.

Is intersected by a complex network of tidal waterways, mud flats and small islands of salt-tolerant mangrove forests.

The name Sundarbans is derived from the Sundari trees growing in the area.

Victoria Memorial

It is situated in Kolkata.

Designed by Sir William Emerson in an architectural style similar to Belfast City Hall.

Built in the Italian Renaissance style with elements of Mughal architecture incorporated in it.

Is a white marble building surrounded by a sprawling garden.

A black bronze Angel of Victory, holding a bugle in her hand sits at the apex of the dome above the Memorial.

Built by British Viceroy Lord Curzon in the memory of Queen Victoria.

It currently serves as a museum and a tourist attraction.

Built between 1906 and 1921, it is situated at the southern end of the Maidan.

Toy Train

Located in Darjeeling, West Bengal.

The Toy Train runs on a 2 feet gauge for a distance of 86 km.

The journey is covered in around 71/2 hours with the train having a maximum speed of 15 kmph.

In the route, wherever there is a lack of clear cut path due to steep gradient, the climb is proceeded through reverses and loops.

There are 500 bridges along with 177 unmanned level crossing through which the train travels.

The train that first ran on the track was way too different from what it is today. It was a mini four wheeled trolley with canvas and two wooden benches.

It still uses steam locomotives.

The Toy Train has also made it to UNESCO’s list World Heritage site status recently.

Bishnupur Terracota Temples

Located in Bishnupur, West Bengal.

Crafted from the local laterite and brick.

The temples are covered with terracotta bricks depicting scenes from the epic Mahabharata and Ramayana.

The distinct style of temple architecture with a single tower resting on a square building with the curved roof of a Bengali hut has been the most characteristic feature of the temples.

Built by the Mala rulers in the 7th –18th century.

Built during a period when the region was witnessing a revival of Hinduism with particular focus on the cult of Krishna.

There is a snake festival in August, Ultorath and the Bishnupur fair in December.

Botanical Gardens and Banyan Tree

Situated on the west bank of river Hooghly in Kolkata, West Bengal.

Covering an area of 273 acres, its unique landscape design contains undulated land surfaces, artificial lakes and moats interconnected with underground pipes receiving water from the river Hooghly

Known as ‘East India Company Bagan’ it was renamed ‘Indian Botanic Garden’ in 1950.

The Great Banyan Tree of the garden is over 250 years old.

With over 2800 prop roots and covering an area of 1.5 hectares, it is said to have the second largest canopy in the world.

Contains about 12,000 living perennial plants and millions of dried out plants gathered from world over.

Has 109 species of Palms, the richest collection in South East Asia.

Has many medicinal plants in its medicinal plant garden (CharakUdyan).

Under the management of the Botanical Survey of India from 1963.

Howrah Bridge

Across the Hooghly Riverin Kolkata, West Bengal.

Is a cantile vertruss bridge constructed entirely by riveting, using no nuts or bolts.

Built between 1937 and 1943, it has a single 450 m span.

It is currently used as a road bridge, but previously had a tram route.

Is 705 m long and 30m wide, supported by two piers, each nearly 90 meters above the road.

An engineering marvel, it expands as much as a meter during a summer day.

Is one of the finest cantilever bridge seen the world -left to India by the British engineers.

Linking Howrah to Kolkata, it is considered the gateway to Kolkata.

Renamed Rabindra Setu after Rabindranath Tagore.

More than 26,500 MT of high-tensile steel went into building this.

Dalhousie Square

Located just south of the Howrah bridge, in Kolkata.

When Kolkata was the administrative centre for British India, Dalhousie Square, now known as BBD Bagh was the centre of power. It is a square area built around the old Lal Dighi tank which exists till date. It was later called the Tank Square and then the Dalhousie Square.

Dalhousie square was named after Lord Dalhousie, Governor General of India from 1847 to 1856. At different times it has been called ‘The Green before the Fort’ or Tank Square.

Now called the B.B.D. Bagh, which stands for three young Indian freedom fighters - Benoy, Badal and Dinesh, who on 8 December, 1930, shot dead the Inspector General of Prisons, N.S. Simpson, in the balconies of Writers` building of the then Dalhousie square.

The tank in the centre, fed by natural springs, is said to have supplied Charnock with drinking water.


There are many historical buildings, offices, business centers and banks which surround the square, which include the Writers` Building, the Raj Bhavan (residence of the Governor), the State Legislative Assembly House, the Calcutta High Court, St John`s Cathedral (the oldest church in Kolkata), the General Post Office and others.
