Ajanta - Ellora Caves

Located near Aurangabad in Maharashtra.

The 29 caves at Ajanta are situated in a horseshoe-shaped ravine.

The cave walls are covered with painted narratives of the Jataka tales.

The 34 caves at Ellora are excavated out of the vertical face of the Charanandri hills.

The exterior of the Kailasha temple is carved with niches, plasters, windows and images of deities and mithunas (erotic male and female figures).

The oldest caves at Ajanta date back to 200 BC.

Some caves were built in the Gupta period in 5th century AD.

Built as secluded retreats of the Buddhist monks.

Carved during 350 AD and 700 AD, the rock temples and monasteries at Ellora represent three faiths - Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.

The caves depict the story of Buddhism and are popular tourist sites.

Ellora has the largest single monolithic excavation in the world.

It is in old Goa, about 10 kms from Panjim.

Is an example of Baroque architecture in India.

Apart from the elaborate gilded altars, the interior of the church is simple.

Has exhibits paintings with scenes taken from the life of St. Francis Xavier.

Built in 1695, it houses the tomb and mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier.

The mausoleum on the top of which is placed the silver casket with the body of St. Francis Xavier (1696) was the gift of the last of the Medicis, Cosimo III, the Grand Duke of Tuscany.

The public viewing of the incorruptible body of St Francis Xavier is displayed once every ten years which attracts a huge number of devotees, both Christian and non-Christian.

It is India’s first Minor Basilica.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus

Located in Mumbai.

Designed in the Victorian Gothic style of architecture.

The building exhibits a fusion of influences from Victorian Italianate Gothic Revival architecture and traditional Indian architecture.

The design bears some resemblance to St.Pancras station in London.

Was christened Victoria Terminus to commemorate Victoria Jubilee Day in 1887 when India`s first steam engine was launched.

It took ten years to complete and was named "Victoria Terminus" in honour of the reigning Queen Victoria.

It is one of the busiest railway stations in India.

Janjira Fort

Situated in the Raigad district of Maharashtra.

It is oval shaped instead of the usual oblong or square shape.

The fort wall is about 40 feet high and has 19 rounded porches or arches.

The main entrance door has a stone carving, which depicts a single tiger that has been trapped by a six elephants.

Constructed by Malik Ambar, an Abssinian minister in the service of the Sultan of Ahmednagar, who belonged to the Nizam shahi dynasty.

It is the only fort along India`s western coast that remained undefeated despite Maratha, Dutch and English East India Company attacks.

Is a popular tourist attraction.

Took 22 years to build and is constructed on 22 acres of land.

Elephanta Caves

Located 10 km from the Gateway of India at Mumbai.

The entire cave temple complex covers an area of about 60,000 sq ft and consists of a main chamber and two lateral ones, courtyards and several subsidiary shrines.

The caves are hewed from solid rock.

Cave 1 represents the evolved Brahmanical rock-cut architecture.

The caves are thought to date back to the Silhara kings of the 9th through 13th centuries.

These rock cut temples dedicated to Shiva Mahadeva.

The Trimurti of Elephanta showing the three faces of Shiva is almost akin to the Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh.

It was named Elephanta by the Portuguese after the statue of an elephant near the landing area of the island.

Lonar Crater Lake

Located in Buldhana district near Aurangabad city.

The crater is rich in bio-diversity housing diverse population of flora and fauna. Home to variety of animal species and birds, most found are peacock, black drongo, little green bee eater, shrike, pipit, crane, hooper,
monitor lizards, rabbit, deer, langur monkeys and snakes.

Among the fauna one can find custard apple, eucalyptus, lemon grass, bamboo, teak and many other trees can be seen.

There is a mystery associated with the lake flowing inside the crater; nobody can say how it remains full through the year. A stream feeds this crater but up to this date no outlet was found.

Churchgate

Located in Mumbai.

Churchgate station is a terminus of Western Railway line of Mumbai suburban railway.

It is the southernmost station of the city.

Churchgate gets its name from the St Thomas Cathedral which was near one of the gates of the walled city of Mumbai.

Churchgate is one of the busiest railway stations in Mumbai.
